After weeks of efforts and solidarity mobilization, the body of Cuban doctor David Martínez Guerrero was recently laid to rest in his hometown, in the municipality of Yara, province of Granma.
The young professional was one of the four fatalities in a domestic accident that occurred in the State of Mexico in early January.
Images posted on social media capture the heartfelt funeral.
The tragic incident that took the life of Martínez Guerrero occurred on January 8th in a residence in the municipality of Texcoco.
According to reports from Civil Protection and Mexican authorities, the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning, allegedly caused by the malfunction of a water heater that generated a persistent gas leak.
In the incident, a total of four Cuban citizens died:
Dr. David Martínez Guerrero (34 years old): A physician from Yara.
Dr. Iliet Ramírez Sardiñas (36 years old): Also a doctor.
Abraham (8 years old): Son of Dr. Iliet.
Osmany Cedeño: A Cuban migrant who resided with them.
The group was in Mexico in a migratory limbo, carrying out legal procedures to try to cross into the United States after the tightening of border policies.
The repatriation process was complex and largely relied on private donations from the Cuban community abroad, due to the lack of resources from family members and the limited financial assistance from consulates.
At the end of January, the remains arrived in Havana.
Shortly after, the remains of the deceased doctor were taken to his hometown. The wake was held at his private residence, located on Perucho Figueredo Street, between Línea Masó and Ignacio Agramonte. He was buried in the municipal cemetery of Yara.
The case of the four Cubans who died in the tragic accident has sparked strong criticism regarding the conditions that force qualified professionals to emigrate.
The victims' relatives have pointed directly to the economic precariousness in Cuba as the trigger for this tragedy.
