The low temperatures in Cuba have inspired gestures of solidarity from activists who aim to protect abandoned animals, as calls on social media multiply for the population to help those most vulnerable.

An activist identified on Facebook as China Ml shared on Sunday in the group Huellas Callejeras de Cuba that she had hit the streets "to at least keep them warm," referring to several stray dogs.

She mentioned that she managed to help three and planned to continue in other rounds, inviting more people to contribute with "little clothes" for the animals.

That same day, wrote again: “Second round sheltering the unprotected,” while showcasing images of dogs dressed in small children's clothes, amidst the cold front that is affecting much of the country.

For its part, the group EPA-Equipo de Protección Animal reported on Facebook that it also went out into the streets of San Antonio de los Baños to feed and shelter the animals despite the bad weather.

"We left with less food because we had no electricity for most of the day," explained the volunteers, who cooked a large pot of rice with liver and ground meat to feed 14 animals in the rain and cold.

EPA also clarified that it decided to directly hand over the shelters to those who can care for community animals, after finding several structures damaged or used as dumping grounds on the streets.

The group reiterated its call to shelter pets and not leave them on rooftops or patios, while activists continue to emphasize the importance of animal protection and solidarity in times of crisis.

Cuba is experiencing notably cold temperatures.

In this regard, the Cuban Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) reported this Tuesday that at the Indio Hatuey station, in the province of Matanzas, a minimum temperature of 0.1°C was recorded at 4:00 am.
