The British Embassy in Havana has announced a vacancy for the position of driver, aiming to fill a position through a fixed-term contract for one year, with the possibility of renewal.

The announcement sets the deadline for submitting applications as February 15, 2026, at 11:59 PM (Cuba time) and warns that applications submitted after this deadline will not be considered.

According to the job description, the selected individual must ensure safe, reliable, and efficient transportation of personnel, visitors, and goods while adhering to authorized routes and the organization's safety standards.

Additionally, support for operational objectives is expected through basic administrative and logistical tasks "as needed."

Main functions of the position

Among the driving responsibilities outlined in the announcement are: transporting staff and visitors; ensuring the timely and safe delivery and pickup of goods and documents; addressing specific driving needs "without prior notice"; and keeping vehicle logbooks, mileage, and fuel consumption up to date.

It is also stated that there is an obligation to keep vehicles and equipment clean and operational, to ensure they have travel authorizations, supplies, and documentation, and to report any breakdowns or incidents immediately.

The document includes procedures for accidents or incidents, emphasizing the need to communicate facts promptly and to follow instructions for “informed” decision-making.

It also demands confidentiality and discretion when transporting passengers or handling information, and requests that vehicles be parked in “safe and appropriate” locations during official duties and at night.

In addition to driving, the hired individual will take on administrative and logistical support tasks, including: preparing and presenting transportation documentation and invoices; performing specific tasks to support the Embassy's objectives; delivering and collecting official correspondence, diplomatic bags, packages, and documents at ministries, embassies, and local institutions; and assisting with customs clearance processes and airport-related procedures.

Requirements and selection criteria

As essential requirements, the call requests demonstrable experience in driving various models and brands, as well as a valid professional license for category B (standard) and D-1 (microbuses with up to 16 seats) vehicles.

It also requires at least three years of experience as a professional driver, with a "proven" track record of safe driving.

The Embassy requests that letters of recommendation, certificates, or other supporting documents be attached along with the application.

Among the "desirable" criteria mentioned are: previous experience in a foreign diplomatic mission or international organization; training or experience in defensive driving; and additional license categories, such as C (truck) and C-1 (van), considered an "added value."

Regarding knowledge and skills, availability for flexible hours (afternoons, nights, and weekends) is required, as well as knowledge of traffic laws and local road conditions, the ability to pass a practical driving test defined by the Embassy, and the aptitude to read and interpret safety regulations and procedural manuals.

It also lists basic emergency response concepts (first aid and use of fire extinguishers), interpersonal skills (responsibility, courtesy, discretion, and tact), teamwork, performance under pressure, reliability, punctuality, and "good physical presence."

The linguistic requirements specify proficiency in Spanish as "essential" and a basic level of spoken English. The announcement adds that interested individuals without Cuban citizenship must demonstrate—at the latest during the interview—that they have a valid residency and work permit in Cuba.

Employment conditions

The position entails 38 hours per week, with a requirement for flexible scheduling based on operational needs. Additionally, the document states that staff members must pay any income tax mandated by local law.

The selected candidate will be subject to a professional background check, must present their criminal record, and will undergo a three-month probation period.

It is also specified that the staff hired by the Embassy will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service and to the local labor laws in Cuba.

The announcement also indicates that the selected individual must complete the approval process of the PALCO Employment Agency, a procedure that "may take between 1 and 3 months," and emphasizes that the Embassy will not be responsible for any denial or decision made by that entity.

To apply, the Embassy indicates that candidates must complete the Driver Application Form through the published link before the deadline. It reiterates that applications received after the deadline "will not be considered."

If the applicant is selected for an interview, they will be asked to provide scanned documents: a resume in Spanish, copies of relevant diplomas/certificates/letters of recommendation, and a copy of their driver's license clearly showing the categories and expiration date.

The Embassy states that the pre-selected candidates will be notified five days in advance and that, due to the "high number" of applications, only those who are pre-selected for an interview will be contacted.

Regarding the timeline of the process, it is stated that the selected candidate will be notified one week after the interview and that their availability to start working is expected from April 1, 2026, contingent upon the completion of internal checks and the process with PALCO.
