The Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Cuba issued an official statement alerting its citizens about the worsening economic situation on the Island and the possible repercussions on security.

The embassy recommends avoiding travel to Cuba while closely monitoring the developments of the internal situation.

For those who are in the country, it is advised to take preventive measures such as limiting time spent in public places, avoiding crowds, and reducing interaction with state institutions and law enforcement agencies.

In the message circulated on Facebook, the office emphasizes that "the economic situation has drastically worsened and, in this context, security may also be affected."

Additionally, it urges Ukrainians to remain calm and to strictly follow the instructions of local authorities while paying attention to updated official communications.

The statement also emphasizes the importance of contacting the consular emergency line immediately in the event of any threat to life or health, while warning of potential interruptions in phone service due to frequent power outages in Cuba.

The embassy assures that its diplomatic staff is on duty 24 hours a day to handle urgent situations, despite the energy constraints.

The specific recommendations include: limiting time spent in open spaces, avoiding crowded gatherings, refraining from engaging in conflicts with law enforcement representatives, and reducing visits to state institutions.

The diplomatic mission concludes by reaffirming its commitment to support and assist its citizens within the scope of its authority.

The embassy's notice reflects a growing concern over the economic collapse affecting the Island, which has led to an increase in risks to the safety of residents and visitors.

In the current Cuban context, characterized by blackouts, shortages, and social tensions, foreign diplomatic authorities are beginning to issue more frequent preventive alerts.

Increasingly damaged relationships

In October, Ukraine announced the closure of its embassy in Havana after voting against the Cuban regime in the UN General Assembly, where a resolution was adopted calling for an end to the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba.

The Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andriy Sybiha, announced that his Ministry has decided to downgrade the level of diplomatic relations and close the diplomatic mission on the Island.

"We recall the Cuban president's wish for 'success' to Putin in his aggressive war against Ukraine. We heard him clearly. This year, we decided to close our embassy in Havana and downgrade the level of our diplomatic relations," the official wrote on X.

The publication was dedicated to Ukraine's vote in the United Nations, a measure that reflects Cuba's support for Moscow's aggression.

Sybiha emphasized that her government's stance is not abrupt and is based on solid foundations.

He recalled that thousands of Cubans have signed contracts to join the Russian troops directly involved in hostilities on Ukrainian soil.

"Our vote is not against the Cuban people; we respect their right to live in prosperity. It is directed against the inaction of the Cuban authorities regarding the mass recruitment of Cuban citizens by the Russian occupying army," he clarified.

"The refusal of Havana to stop the massive deployment of its citizens in the Russian war against Ukraine constitutes complicity in aggression and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Ukraine will always oppose this practice and will defend the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter," the minister emphasized on Telegram.

Last July, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Chancellor presented a new strategic plan to reorganize Ukraine's diplomatic network, and one of the most significant announcements was the reduction of his country's diplomatic presence in Cuba.

The United States estimates that between 1,000 and 5,000 Cubans have joined the Russian ranks attacking Ukraine.
