In the municipality of Imías (Guantánamo), cracks were reported in 14 homes and in the polyclinic as a result of the earthquake that occurred on the morning of this Sunday.

According to the official reports, the epicenter of the phenomenon was located in that area of eastern Guantanamo.

According to information from official local media, working groups continue to visit the popular councils to assess other possible impacts caused by the event.

The Party Secretary in the municipality reported by phone —through the radio program “In Frequency with the People”— that minor aftershocks have been felt, but that the population “remains calm” and that all response measures are active.

It was also reported that preliminary findings indicate no damage was found on the La Farola viaduct, but impacts were noted in four state entities.

The National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), based in Santiago de Cuba, issued a preliminary report on the seismic activity recorded in the morning.

According to initial data, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale and originated at an estimated depth of 10 kilometers.

CENAIS located the epicenter approximately 39 kilometers southeast of Imías, in Guantánamo.

So far, the report indicates that no human or material damage has been reported, although local authorities and rapid response teams remain on alert and watchful for possible aftershocks in the coming hours.

At around 10:04 a.m., a noticeable aftershock was recorded in Imías, following the earthquake. The message also urged people to remain calm.
