On the morning of this Sunday, an earthquake was felt in some areas of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, and Granma, Enrique Diego Arango Arias, Head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba, reported on Facebook. Some even reported it from Holguín.
"The network of stations of the Cuban National Seismological Service has registered an earthquake reported as perceptible at 7:00 a.m. local time, located at coordinates 20.16 degrees north latitude and 74.44 degrees west longitude, at a depth of 7.1 km and with a magnitude of 5.6, situated 24.0 km southeast of Imías," it detailed.
According to the expert, since the phenomenon occurred, 21 aftershocks were recorded in the first hour, none of which were reported as perceptible.
In the second hour, there were 12 aftershocks, none of which were perceptible.
The CENAIS confirmed the event on its website, where it located the phenomenon 30 km southeast of Imías.
As of the drafting of this note, reports of perceptibility have been received from various locations in the provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, and Granma.
No material or human damages have been reported either. The population is advised to remain calm, check vulnerable structures, and stay informed with official updates.
Scientists have confirmed that there is no tsunami alert associated with this new earthquake.
On social media, several Cubans confirmed that they felt it.
"Strong, very strong, it shook my house," said a user from Palma Soriano.
"Very strong in Moa, Holguín"; "strong here in the 18 of Garzón (Santiago)"; "I felt it very strongly, it got me out of bed" and "the tremor was very strong here in Versalles, really very strong," commented residents in provinces of the area on the CiberCuba post on .
