"The network of stations of the Cuban National Seismological Service has recorded an earthquake reported as perceptible at 11:53 AM local time, located at coordinates 19.77 degrees north latitude and 75.40 degrees west longitude, at a depth of 18 km and with a magnitude of 3.1 degrees," the report states.

"To date, reports of perceptibility have been received in the city of Santiago de Cuba. As of the latest update, no material or human damage has been reported," the information adds.

It was the ninth perceptible earthquake of the year.

On Saturday, Arango Arias stated that the seismic activity of the past few days in eastern Cuba is within normal parameters.

“For those who have asked me with concern, the seismic activity in our territory can be considered normal; in the Pilón area, the aftershocks of the 6.7 magnitude earthquake from November 10th continue,” from the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS).

Arango Arias clarified that "in the area from Santiago to Guantánamo, only earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 2.0 are recorded because the Río Carpintero station is out of service."

"Therefore, the number of low-energy earthquakes in this area must be greater than what is reported in this daily report. The 3.7 magnitude earthquake from yesterday is part of the routine activity in this zone," he added.

On Friday, a noticeable earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale was recorded by the network of stations of the National Seismological Service at 11:51 a.m. (local time).

It was located at coordinates 19.78° north latitude and -75.37° west longitude, at a depth of 23 kilometers and 29 km southwest of Caimanera, in the Niceto Pérez municipality, Guantánamo province.

In recent months, vseveral noticeable earthquakes have shaken the eastern region of the island.

It is important to highlight that eastern Cuba is the area with the highest seismic activity in the country, due to its proximity to the Oriente fault, one of the most active in the region.

Historically, this area has been the site of significant earthquakes, including the recent earthquake of magnitude 6.8 that occurred on November 10, 2024, which caused material damage in several eastern provinces.

Cuban authorities maintain constant surveillance and urge the population to follow civil protection recommendations to ensure their safety in the event of possible seismic events.
