The Cuban actor Alden Knight is going through a delicate health situation.
This was confirmed over the weekend by colleagues and friends from the artistic community, after it was reported that the performer is being treated in the intensive care unit of the Manuel Fajardo Hospital in Havana, in a serious condition.
The user Alexei Chiong was the first to raise the alarm via Facebook.
"I ask all friends to pray for the swift recovery of our friend Alden Knight, who is in a compromised health condition in the intensive care unit of Fajardo Hospital. Stay strong, brother," he wrote.
Hours later, Luis Lacosta, a renowned art director from the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Industry (ICAIC), also joined in the messages of support.
"Our thoughts are with the swift recovery of our brother Alden. We hope to have him among us again and continue enjoying his contagious smile," he expressed on Facebook.
So far, no official details have been provided regarding the cause of his admission or the actor's clinical progression.
However, the news has generated a wave of messages of solidarity within the Cuban cultural sphere, where Alden Knight is a widely known and respected figure.
A life dedicated to art… and to the official discourse
Born on August 15, 1936, in the municipality of Florida, Camagüey, Alden Knight is one of the most prolific actors in the Cuban scene. He has worked in theater, television, radio, film, and cabaret, with over a hundred productions throughout his career.
In addition to being an actor, he was a drama teacher, presenter, and program director, and he received multiple accolades, including the Alejo Carpentier Award, the National Television Award of Cuba, and several Caricatos Awards, including those dedicated to children's programming.
Son of a very humble family, with a Jamaican father and a Panamanian mother of Jamaican descent, he spent his childhood marked by economic hardships. At the age of 10, the family moved to Guantánamo, where he began to get involved in the artistic world as a recitalist and singer at the CMKS radio station.
Later, he emigrated to Havana to study acting. There, he made his way in theater, radio, and television, winning the favor of the audience.
In cinema, he participated in titles such as "El otro Cristóbal" (1963), "El Bautizo" (1968), "El otro Francisco" (1975), "Una mujer, un hombre, una ciudad" (1978), and "Lejos de África" (1996).
In the 1970s, he gained recognition for his work on the works of National Poet Nicolás Guillén, alongside actress Asenneh Rodríguez. He also collaborated with her in series and other dramatized productions, forming an artistic duo beloved by the audience.
But Alden Knight's career has not only been linked to art. For decades, he has also been an outspoken defender of the Cuban regime and, in particular, of Fidel Castro.
Their artistic work has been closely tied to the political process: they took part in official acts, rallies, and events organized by the State, becoming part of the cultural apparatus that supported the narrative of power.
In 2016, following the death of Fidel Castro, Knight appeared on a special program on Cuban television where he described the former leader as a "brilliant man," with "tremendous strength" and "sensitive." He even stated that Fidel "was not, but is, because he is still there."
In 2020, in an interview with the weekly Trabajadores, he openly defended the Cuban revolution as a "liberating" work, stating that, despite errors and difficulties, "the successes outweigh the failures." He recounted that his family had been able to develop professionally thanks to the system and declared himself "happy in his homeland."
Thus, Alden Knight has been both a long-established and solidly experienced actor and a public voice aligned with the discourse of power in Cuba.
Today, as he remains in intensive care, colleagues, institutions, and supporters await his recovery in a country where the precariousness of the healthcare system and the lack of official information often accompany these critical moments.
