The Republican congressman Mario Díaz-Balart praised President Donald Trump's policy towards Cuba and stated that the current administration is not willing to legitimize or support the Cuban regime.
The statements were made during an interview with Fox News, in which Díaz-Balart described the situation on the island as "disastrous" and praised Trump for pressuring the regime instead of easing it with political or economic concessions.
"The oil that Maduro sent has not been used by the regime in Havana to help the people," asserted the legislator, who claimed that those resources were used for internal repression and to benefit high officials and their families.
Díaz-Balart defended the direct shipment of humanitarian aid to the Cuban people and emphasized that, unlike other governments, the Trump administration channels that assistance through the Catholic Church and Caritas to prevent it from being controlled by the state apparatus.
The congressman dismissed the argument that sanctions are responsible for the suffering on the island, noting that blackouts, shortages, and the collapse of services have existed for years due to corruption and the system's incompetence.
During the interview, Díaz-Balart stated that any conversation with Havana must be aimed at real change and not at giving time or oxygen to the regime, in compliance with U.S. legislation that conditions the normalization of relations on deep political transformations.
"President Trump is not willing to accept a narcoterrorist dictatorship 90 miles from the United States," he stated, insisting that pressure will continue until there is a change that guarantees freedom for the Cuban people and security for the region.
