The Mexican Navy rescued seven Cuban citizens who were stranded off the coast of Banco Chinchorro, in the state of Quintana Roo, after drifting in a small boat in Caribbean waters.

According to the newspaper El Momento, the Secretariat of the Navy reported that the operation was carried out by naval personnel from the Eleventh Naval Zone, in coordination with the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) and the National Migration Institute (INM).

According to the official report, the migrants were traveling in a small boat when they were initially assisted by local fishermen, who managed to bring them to safety and later handed them over to the personnel from Conanp stationed at Banco Chinchorro.

Transfer to Mahahual and medical attention

Once the survivors were received, the Commission requested support from the Navy Secretariat to transfer them to the port of Mahahual, where the corresponding protocols were activated to carry out the maritime operation.

The balseros were evaluated by Navy Health personnel, who confirmed that they were all in good health, without injuries or serious issues.

Subsequently, they were safely transported aboard the intercepting patrol boat ARM “Rasalhague”, which arrived at the fishermen's dock in Mahahual during the morning of this day.

Migration procedures

Upon their arrival, the seven Cubans were met by officials from the National Migration Institute, who began the necessary procedures for identification, protection, and migration regularization in accordance with current regulations.

The Navy Secretariat reiterated that these actions are part of its commitment to safeguarding human life at sea and to working in coordination with other institutions to address emergencies in national waters.

The rescue takes place against a backdrop of increasing Cuban migration along dangerous routes, driven by the economic and social crisis on the island.
