The town of El Cobre, in Santiago de Cuba, experienced a scene of horror this Sunday in broad daylight. Eduardo, a 31-year-old young man known as "K’ñin," was murdered around noon on a street near the National Sanctuary of the Virgin of Charity.
According to reported by journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, the alleged attacker - an older man identified as "Mito" - inflicted three fatal wounds with a bladed weapon.
The victim, who was turning 32 on the upcoming February 14, died on the spot.
"K’ñin" was known by everyone in the village. He sold flowers, stones from the mine, and sunflowers to the pilgrims, improvised songs, and made a living with whatever he could find.
His presence was a common sight around the Sanctuary.
“Eduardito was one of the familiar faces in the Sanctuary... and now he is no longer here”, wrote Mayeta.
So far, the authorities have not provided an official account of the reasons behind the crime.
However, there are rumors in the village about debts or personal conflicts, but there is no confirmation.
The murder has sparked a wave of pain, indignation, and unanswered questions.
Those who knew the deceased have filled social media with messages of mourning and calls for justice.
"For whatever reason it may have been, there is always the possibility of resolving things amicably. Not through violence, especially not among friends, acquaintances, and in one's own neighborhood," asserted an internet user.
"These things shouldn't happen, especially in a town where everyone knows each other... His mother is devastated," added another.
"What a great sadness... a good young man who helped people. May God have him in glory!"; "There were no reasons to kill him. The one who did it is a murderer. I demand the maximum penalty"; "The historic moment of desperation has driven men mad. But even so, killing can’t be justified," were other opinions.
Many users called for severe penalties for the aggressor and questioned the functioning of the judicial system in Cuba.
"Until severe sanctions are imposed, this won't stop. Capital punishment for anyone who takes a life"; "Now they catch him and in no time he's back on the street. Remember, it's more expensive to kill a cow than to kill a human being"; "You can get out of jail, but not out of the cemetery," wrote other commenters.
"Enough violence among us. Isn't it enough with the shortages, diseases, blackouts, and hunger?" concluded an internet user.
As of this note's closing, there is no additional information regarding what has occurred.
