The Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres, called for dialogue among all parties as a way to prevent a worsening of the energy crisis in Cuba, characterized by a severe fuel shortage that is impacting basic services and the lives of the population.
According to his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the deterioration of the energy landscape is having a profound impact on the population and the functioning of essential services, the agency reported EFE.
"The Secretary-General is concerned about the situation, which is worsening," Dujarric stated during a press conference, referring to the increasing difficulties in meeting the country's oil needs.
The UN insists on dialogue
According to the cited source, the spokesperson recalled that the United Nations General Assembly has repeatedly expressed its rejection of the U.S. embargo, indicating that it negatively impacts economic development and living conditions in Cuba.
In that context, Guterres reiterated the need to seek a solution through discussions. "We firmly believe in the importance of dialogue. The Secretary-General wants dialogue," Dujarric emphasized.
He also indicated that the UN has teams working on the ground alongside the Cuban government to support the humanitarian response and mitigate the impact on the population.
A crisis exacerbated by the lack of fuel
Cuba is experiencing a deep energy crisis, but the situation has worsened since January due to increased difficulties in accessing fuel and the blockade on oil supplies to the island, ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump.
National production barely covers about one third of the country's energy needs, which greatly forces dependence on imports of crude oil and derivatives to sustain the electric system.
