A 45-year-old Cuban was arrested in Mexico City after being caught inside a home with eight pairs of leather boots that he allegedly attempted to steal, according to local press reports.
The incident occurred in the Ampliación Penitenciaría neighborhood, in the Venustiano Carranza delegation, when residents alerted capital police about an ongoing robbery at the intersection of Ferrocarril Interoceánico and Tapicería streets, reported Excélsior.
According to the official report, the property owner informed the agents that a man had entered without authorization and was attempting to take several items.
With the consent of the affected party, the officers entered the residence and located the suspect still inside the home. After a preventive search, they seized a black bag containing eight pairs of leather boots, with an estimated value of around 20,000 Mexican pesos.
The man was arrested at the scene, his rights were read to him, and he was placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office along with the recovered goods. It will be that authority that determines his legal situation and opens the corresponding investigation file, added La Prensa.
The case takes place against a backdrop of a growing presence of Cuban migrants in Mexico in recent years. Many use the country as a route to the United States, while others stay there temporarily or for extended periods, amid immigration processes or while waiting for job opportunities.
Mexican authorities have reported an increase at various times in the flow of citizens from the island, a phenomenon linked to the economic and social crisis facing Cuba.
So far, no further details have been released regarding the detainee's immigration status.
