The Cuban embassy in Madrid woke up last Wednesday to new graffiti against the regime, in a gesture that once again highlights the discontent of the exile community in Europe.

On the exterior walls of the diplomatic mission, the phrases "Cuba Libre" and "Patria y Vida" were clearly visible, along with other slogans against the dictatorship, written in black paint on the wall facing the street.

The images began circulating on social media early in the day and, as reported by the activist Lázaro Mireles, were removed shortly after.

"The Castro-communist embassy in Madrid has been covered with graffiti against the regime in Cuba, and due to the terror they are experiencing, they rushed to remove it," Mireles wrote on his public profile, where he shared a video of the location.

The graffiti appeared in the context of the visit by U.S. diplomat Mike Hammer to the Spanish capital, where he met with over 100 Cubans residing in Europe, members of civil society and exile organizations.

During that meeting, Hammer asserted that the future of the island must be decided by the Cubans themselves "in freedom, in peace, and with the opportunity to prosper economically."

The diplomat conveyed the message from President Donald Trump’s administration and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reiterating the United States' commitment to the Cuban people.

"Change in Cuba is not something that can be achieved; it's something that will be achieved," he affirmed to those present.

Although there is no official confirmation regarding who carried out the graffiti, many have interpreted the gesture as a symbolic expression of the frustration that persists among Cubans outside the island, especially during a time of deep economic crisis and internal repression.

The images of the wall with the phrase "Cuba Libre" stirred mixed feelings among emigrants who remain vigilant for any signs of protest, both inside and outside the country. For many, beyond the erased paint, the message remains alive.

While promises of international support and calls for a free Cuba echoed in Madrid, the walls of its embassy transformed, for a few hours, into another space for protest.
