A recent medical emergency at the Juan Paz Camejo hospital in Sagua de Tánamo, Holguín, has sparked strong criticism on social media after it was revealed that the healthcare facility was without electricity at the time when a urgent surgical procedure was to be performed.
According to reported by the Facebook page Bloguero Tanameño, it was necessary for the provincial office of the Electric Company of Holguín to restore service to the municipality during the night in order to operate on a patient with a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, a condition that poses an immediate risk to life.
The publication stated that situations like this cannot depend on the availability of an ambulance to transport the patient more than 40 kilometers to another center. "In life, every minute counts," emphasized the text, which called on authorities to ensure the hospital's viability.
They are requesting a fuel reserve for the generator
The local blog suggested that the hospital should have a fuel reserve for its power plant in order to avoid relying on external decisions in emergencies.
"Although when the electricity service is restored we benefit as a population, in practice more fuel is consumed than if the generator were activated for those emergencies," the publication indicated.
Outrage on social media
The case sparked a wave of critical comments. Several internet users questioned why government facilities have electricity while the hospital faces blackouts.
"The government with power outages and the hospital in darkness and not providing services," wrote a user. Others described the situation as a "disrespect" and warned about the risk of losing human lives due to lack of energy or fuel.
Some comments referred to potential future emergencies, such as heart attacks or pediatric complications, that cannot afford delays.
A recurring problem
Power outages and fuel shortages continue to impact essential services in various provinces of the country. In the case of hospitals, the lack of adequate energy backup has been a recurring issue, particularly in municipalities far from the provincial capitals.
So far, local authorities have not issued a detailed official statement regarding the measures that will be taken to prevent the Juan Paz Camejo hospital from experiencing power outages in critical situations again.
Meanwhile, residents insist that ensuring the uninterrupted operation of a hospital should be a priority, especially when it comes to emergencies where every minute can make the difference between life and death.
