Agents from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in San Diego arrested a Cuban citizen with a criminal record, the agency reported on social media.
According to ICE San Diego, the detainee has been identified as Juan Estrada Almager, described as a "criminal alien" and aggravated felon under U.S. immigration law.
Authorities indicated that Estrada Almager has convictions for possession of a stolen vehicle and for possession and manufacturing of methamphetamine, crimes that place him within the priority categories for immigration control actions.
ICE did not provide additional details about the exact date of the arrest or the ongoing immigration process, but in similar cases, the agency typically begins deportation proceedings following the detention.
The arrest of Estrada Almager occurs within a broader context of debate regarding how federal authorities publicly present the backgrounds of detained immigrants.
Recently, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) acknowledged that the website created to showcase the so-called "worst of the worst" immigrants arrested by ICE contained significant errors. An investigation by CNN revealed that thousands of individuals were listed as convicted or arrested for serious crimes—including sexual offenses and homicides—when, in reality, many were facing much lesser charges, such as traffic fines, marijuana possession, or illegal reentry after a prior deportation.
The portal, launched in December and promoted by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, the White House, and President Donald Trump as a showcase of immigration policy, currently includes about 25,000 names—2,000 of which are Cubans—along with the offenses that, according to the agency, led to their arrest or conviction.
