The Republican Party of Cuba (PRC), which defines itself as the largest opposition political organization in Cuba, issued a statement distancing itself from the actions taken by 10 Cubans residing in the United States, who set out in a boat towards the shores of Cuba, where a confrontation with the Border Guard occurred, resulting in four deaths.

The opposition organization, which has a presence and membership both on and off the Island, reaffirms in its message that its work is strictly political.

"The PRC does not direct armed actions, nor does it exert control over the decisions or individual actions that its members or supporters may take on a personal basis," says the text shared on Facebook.

In relation to the events that occurred in Cuba, the Party confirmed that Michel Ortega Casanova, who has already been confirmed as one of the four victims killed by the troops of the Castro regime during the armed excursion, was a member of the organization.

"Although Michel was a member of the PRC, the leadership of the organization was completely unaware of his intentions, plans, or involvement in that event," the document emphasizes.

Ortega Casanova had been in the United States for a short time and resided in Tampa. The Casa Cuba organization of Tampa described him as "a patriot, a man committed to the cause of freedom, and a member of the Republican Party of Cuba."

For the Republican Party, the tragic event is a testament to the level of desperation to which the Cuban people have been pushed by tyranny, after six decades of repression, lack of freedoms, and the closure of all civic avenues.

"The Republican Party of Cuba reiterates its commitment to political struggle, responsibility, and respect for life, and expresses its condolences to the families of our fallen brethren," concludes the statement, signed by its president Ibrahim Bosch.
