American Airlines announced a $1 billion investment plan aimed at expanding Concourse D (North Terminal) at Miami International Airport (MIA).
The goal is to strengthen its position in its main hub towards Latin America and significantly enhance the passenger experience.
The project, called Gate D60, involves the construction of a three-level infrastructure that will replace the current remote operations with 17 traditional boarding gates designed for modern aircraft, eliminating the platform boarding for regional flights.
Each gate will feature individual waiting rooms and direct access to the customs area on the third floor to streamline the handling of international flights.
Additionally, adjacent boarding areas, commercial and dining spaces, and premium lounges will be integrated.
Construction will begin in 2027, and the expansion aims to transform the passenger experience from the sidewalk to the airplane cabin over the next five years.
The design also includes the opening of a new Flagship Lounge, the expansion of the Admirals Club, the addition of self-service kiosks, and biometric processing technologies in collaboration with the TSA and CBP.
Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines, noted that Miami is an essential hub and an international gateway for the airline, a key part of its history and its future.
"The investment, along with new premium lounges and routes, reflects the commitment to ensure that Miami remains the main connection between the United States and Latin America," he specified.
Currently, American Airlines accounts for more than 60% of the total traffic at MIA, operating nearly 400 daily departures, with over 380 peak hour flights to 155 destinations in 45 countries, including more than 90 exclusive destinations from this terminal.
The airline aims to modernize baggage handling and improve operational efficiency over the next few years.
Daniella Levine Cava, mayor of Miami-Dade County, described the D60 expansion as "one of the most monumental customer service improvements within our modernization plan," emphasizing that the project will transform the passenger experience and strengthen Miami's competitiveness as an international hub.
For his part, Juan Carlos Liscano, Vice President of Operations for American at MIA, added: "We have built a partnership over decades that intertwines our success and vitality. This expansion is a testament to our long-term commitment."
