A video posted on TikTok by the user identified as @its_sandry_ has gone viral after listing five recommendations for those planning to travel to Cuba amidst the current crisis the country is experiencing.
In the audiovisual piece, the young woman warns about the need to be "extremely prepared" for issues such as the dengue epidemic, prolonged blackouts, technological limitations, and rising insecurity.
As a first piece of advice, he recommends bringing mosquito repellent "in all its forms," due to what he describes as one of the worst epidemics of dengue and mosquito-borne diseases in recent years.
According to the statement, the health situation makes it essential to take additional preventive measures, especially for those who are not accustomed to living with high levels of infestation.
Secondly, it advises tourists to bring all their money in cash, as the use of international bank cards and digital payments is very limited on the Island.
Additionally, it is recommended not to exchange currency at the airport or at Casas de Cambio (CADECA), where, as noted, the exchange rate is usually well below the value circulating in the informal market. It is suggested to find someone trustworthy or consult independent platforms that publish the daily dollar rate in Cuba to avoid losses.
Another highlight is the prolonged blackouts. The TikToker suggests bringing rechargeable lamps, portable fans, and external chargers for mobile phones due to the frequent power outages affecting much of the country.
"When the power goes out, the internet goes out too," he warns in the video, referring to the instability of mobile data during power outages.
Finally, it is recommended not to carry valuable items when going out. In his message, he mentions an increase in assaults and suggests avoiding carrying main phones, chains, or other expensive items that could make the visitor a target for theft.
The video has generated numerous reactions on social media, where users both inside and outside of Cuba agree that the recommendations reflect the everyday struggles faced by the population amid the economic crisis, power outages, and the increasing insecurity in the country.
