Authorities in Guantánamo confirmed the arrest of the alleged murderer of the young Cuban Osniel Puentes Cueto, 19 years old, in mid-February, in the town of Paraguay.
The news of the arrest of the alleged person responsible for Puentes' death, an event that shocked the residents of that community in eastern Cuba, was announced on Friday on the Facebook profile “Guantánamo and its Truth”, associated with the Ministry of the Interior (Minint).
The investigation of the case, led by the Minint, began on February 16, when the young man's body was discovered by members of the National Revolutionary Police.
The body was found submerged in water beneath a bridge near the locality, two days after the homicide. The identification of the victim was carried out with the assistance of family members, close friends, and neighbors, according to the statement.
During the investigation, the experts gathered evidence and testimonies that helped clarify the crime and determine the identity of the aggressor, the source indicated.
The police determined that the murder was committed on the night of February 14 by an acquaintance of Puentes, who lived in his own neighborhood and with whom he had a friendship.
According to the official account of events, the young man had an outstanding financial debt with the individual since last December, which suggests that this may have been the motive for the fatal attack, although the authorities have not confirmed it.
"The investigations indicate that, under the influence of alcohol, the assailant drove Osniel to the location where he took his life," the note specified, adding that his body was subsequently found.
The authorities have not revealed the identity of the accused nor how the crime that cut short Puentes' life was carried out, leaving his family and friends in mourning.
The incident "has caused sadness in the community, which deeply mourns the loss and condemns this type of violent act," the text emphasized, while urging "to resolve personal conflicts through peaceful means."
The tragic incident occurs in the context of an increase in violence and insecurity in the country due to the rise in crime, which has led to a surge in murders, assaults, robberies, and thefts, amid a deep economic, social, and political crisis.
Both the publication and users in the comments praised the "effective work of the authorities of the Ministry of the Interior" in Guantánamo for the swift clarification of this case.
However, on social media, there are ongoing complaints and criticisms from the public highlighting the negligence and ineffectiveness of the police in curbing the criminal spiral that has left citizens on edge throughout the country.
