The French president, Emmanuel Macron, announced on Tuesday the deployment of the nuclear aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to the Mediterranean as part of the reinforcement of the French military presence in the region, amid the escalation of the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran.
In a televised speech to the nation, Macron warned about the seriousness of the situation following the American and Israeli bombings on Iranian territory — which he disapproved of for being conducted outside of international law — though he ultimately attributed the responsibility to Tehran for its military program and support for regional militias.
“The history never mourns the executioners of its people. None will be missed,” stated the French leader, in remarks reported by the agency EFE.
Coalition to Protect Maritime Routes
Macron proposed the creation of an international coalition to ensure the security of strategic maritime routes, in response to Iranian threats concerning the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20% of the world's oil passes.
It also warned that the Suez Canal and the Red Sea are "under tension and threatened."
The deployment of the Charles de Gaulle —currently maneuvering in the Baltic Sea— represents a significant gesture to reinforce the French military presence in the region.
France had already deployed fighters, radars, and air defense systems in the region and will continue to expand the deployment "as much as necessary," Macron stated.
In support of Cyprus, following the impact on a British base on the island, Paris also announced the dispatch of the frigate Languedoc, which will arrive in its territorial waters in the coming hours.
Warning to Israel
Macron also warned Israel against a possible ground operation in Lebanon, calling it a "dangerous escalation and strategic error," while also criticizing the Shiite militia Hizbulá for initiating attacks that, he said, put the Lebanese people at risk.
"France supports the Lebanese authorities in their efforts to regain control of their security," he added.
Economic impact and repatriations
The French president emphasized that the conflict threatens to cause "profound disruptions" in oil and gas prices, which would impact the global economy.
Additionally, they announced measures to repatriate around 400,000 French citizens residing or stranded in the region. Two flights with evacuees will arrive in Paris this Tuesday.
In the national territory, the Government has strengthened the security operation "Centinela," increasing surveillance around targets deemed sensitive.
If you want, I can prepare a stronger headline or an approach that focuses more on the energy and economic impact of the French deployment.
