Social dining facilities that serve hundreds of elderly people in Cuba continue operating thanks to the support of Catholic organizations, amidst the shortages facing the country.
The information was shared in the group Facebook Católicos de Cuba by the NGO Hombre Nuevo Tierra Nueva, established in 2000 to support the elderly, children, common prisoners, and people with disabilities on the island.
According to their details, they recently managed to collect and send a pallet with 385 cans of chickpeas, amounting to almost 1,000 kilograms of direct aid.
The shipment was distributed to seven social dining halls: five in Havana—Claretianos, Siervas de San José, Compañía de María, a Presbyterian church, and Sanchinas—one in Camagüey (Compañía de María) and another in Matanzas (Eucharistic Missionaries of Nazareth).
The NGO thanked the logistical support of Asociación Puente Cuba, which facilitated the shipment in its container, and emphasized that, in the current context of difficulties, these donations represent real relief for the feeding of the elderly.
However, the organization warned that in February it was only able to send 143 kilograms of donations due to the shortage of travelers and supportive crews that typically transport aid to the island.
In light of this situation, Hombre Nuevo Tierra Nueva announced that it has decided to resort to messaging services to deliver medicines and food, which entails higher costs.
For this reason, he/she requested financial support to maintain and expand the shipments.
In a landscape marked by economic crisis and the deterioration of the state assistance system, these dining facilities have become an essential support for hundreds of elderly individuals in vulnerable situations.
