The United States Embassy in Havana issued a security alert following the massive blackout that left much of western Cuba, including the capital, without electricity.

The warning was published on the social media of the diplomatic mission this Wednesday, where it was reported that at 12:41 p.m. a disconnection occurred in the national electric system, affecting areas from Camagüey to Pinar del Río.

According to the message, the power outage included the metropolitan area of Havana and occurred after the unexpected shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras Thermal Power Plant, according to information provided by Cuban regime authorities.

The embassy noted that there is no information on when electrical service might be restored in the western part of the country.

The alert also warned that the national electrical grid in Cuba is becoming increasingly unstable and that prolonged blackouts, both scheduled and unexpected, have become a daily situation across the country, including Havana.

The diplomatic mission reminded that power outages affect basic services such as water supply, lighting, food refrigeration, and communications.

In light of this situation, he advised U.S. citizens on the island to take precautions and prepare for prolonged service interruptions.

Among the suggested measures are to conserve fuel, water, and food, keep mobile phones and portable batteries charged, have flashlights with spare batteries, and have alternatives to meet medical needs that rely on electricity.

The embassy also advised to follow the daily updates from the Electric Union (UNE), listen to local stations such as Radio Reloj, and stay in touch with family and friends for updated information.
