The Cuban regime lamented the decision of the Honduran government not to renew the agreement that allowed the presence of Cuban doctors in the Central American country, following the departure of 168 healthcare professionals, resulting in the dictatorship losing another source of funding.
The ambassador of Cuba in Honduras, Juan Roberto Loforte Osorio, expressed his position in statements to the channel TSiHonduras during the farewell of the doctors at the Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro Sula.
According to the diplomat, the agreement signed between both governments has expired, and the Honduran authorities decided not to renew it following the change in administration.
"The agreement we had with the government of Honduras has been fulfilled, it was not renewed, and they are returning to Cuba," he stated.
Loforte stated that the argument presented by the Honduran government for not extending the program was the need to implement budget cuts.
The ambassador added that the Cuban doctors stayed in the country for two years and were distributed across most of the Honduran departments.
During that time, he indicated, the medical brigade worked primarily in areas such as ophthalmology and other health services.
The diplomat also assured that, upon returning to Cuba, some of the professionals could reintegrate into the Cuban healthcare system or be sent on other medical missions abroad.
