Roberto Álvarez, one of the six injured individuals who survived the armed confrontation between Cuban military and a civilian vessel from Florida that took place in Corralillo, Villa Clara, passed away this Thursday due to medical complications.
The information was revealed by journalist Daniel Benítez, who indicated that Álvarez had been transferred from intensive care in Villa Clara to a hospital in Havana, where he suffered a hemorrhage and subsequently a heart attack, according to the version conveyed to relatives on the island.
The incident occurred on February 25, when a boat registered in the state of Florida was intercepted by Cuban border guard troops near the northern coast of Villa Clara. The confrontation initially resulted in four deaths and several injuries.
With Álvarez's death, the number of fatalities linked to the incident would rise to five, although Cuban authorities have not publicly confirmed any new details regarding the condition of the survivors.
Álvarez's wife, a resident of the United States, confirmed his passing but declined to make any public statements out of respect for the family's time of mourning.
So far, the Ministry of the Interior (Minint) has not provided any information regarding Álvarez's death.
