The President of the United States, Donald Trump, suggested this Thursday that political changes in Cuba could occur in the near future during an exchange with Cuban-American businessman Jorge Más, owner of the Inter Miami club, at an event held at the White House.
In a video shared on social media, Trump congratulated the co-owners of the team, Jorge and José Más, whose families emigrated from Cuba, and hinted that the situation on the island could change soon.
"You are going to return... you won't need my approval, you will simply fly back. It will be a great day," commented the leader during the conversation.
Jorge Más responded, "It's going to be an amazing day."
Trump added that he hopes to meet with him again in the near future to celebrate what he described as potential changes on the island.
“Let’s celebrate separately. I just wanted to wait a couple of weeks… but we will be together again very soon, celebrating what is happening in Cuba. They desperately want to reach an agreement. You have no idea,” the president stated.
Trump's words come just days after the president himself stated that his administration seeks to transform the situation in Cuba so that many Cubans who emigrated can return to the island.
"What is happening with Cuba is incredible... we want to fix that. It will only be a matter of time before many incredible people return to Cuba,” the president recently said.
Trump has also suggested that a potential political change on the island could pave the way for thousands of Cubans living abroad to return to the country.
The exchange with Jorge Más took place during the reception that Trump held at the White House for the players of Inter Miami, including Argentine star Lionel Messi, to celebrate the team's title in the last season of Major League Soccer (MLS).
During the event, the players presented the president with a club jersey featuring the number 47, referring to his position as the 47th president of the United States.
The meeting also marked the first direct contact between Trump and Messi, and served as a backdrop for the president's statements regarding the political situation in Cuba, which he has mentioned several times in recent weeks as a country that could undergo significant changes.
