The Republican congressman Pat Harrigan stated this Friday that Cuba is within the "zone of influence" of the United States in the hemisphere and suggested that the Cuban regime is seeking to negotiate with the administration of President Donald Trump.
The statements were shared on social media by journalist Aaron Rupar, who posted a clip of the U.S. lawmaker's speech.
"Cuba is now coming to President Trump and saying, 'We need to make a deal.' This is a major development for U.S. interests," Harrigan stated.
The congressman added that the island is part of Washington's strategic space on the American continent.
"Clearly, Cuba is right in our sphere of influence, in our hemisphere. This is what we are achieving. This is the peace that we are truly earning," he pointed out.
Harrigan is a member of the House of Representatives for the tenth district of the state of North Carolina and is part of the Republican Party.
His statements come in the midst of recent comments by President Donald Trump, who claimed that the Cuban regime is "desperate" to reach an agreement with the United States.
During a meeting at the White House with players and executives from Inter Miami, Trump stated that the island's authorities want to negotiate with Washington.
"They desperately want to reach an agreement. They have no idea how much," the leader said at that moment.
Although the Cuban government denies the existence of formal negotiations with Washington, in recent weeks, statements from political figures in the U.S. regarding potential changes in the relationship with the island have increased.
