The President of the United States, Donald Trump, asserted this Thursday that the Cuban regime is desperate to reach an agreement with Washington, according to statements made during a meeting with players and executives from Inter Miami, including Cuban-American businessman Jorge Mas and star Lionel Messi.

During the conversation, Trump congratulated the co-owners of the club, Jorge and José Mas, whose families emigrated from Cuba, and hinted at the possibility of changes in the situation on the island.

“Let’s celebrate that separately. I just wanted to wait a couple of weeks… but I think we’ll soon be together celebrating what is happening in Cuba,” the official stated.

Trump added that the Cuban authorities would be interested in negotiating with the United States.

“They are desperately trying to make an agreement. They have no idea how much,” she expressed.

Although the president did not provide details about possible negotiations or concrete measures towards the island, his comments suggest that Washington's policy towards Cuba could experience new developments in the coming weeks.

Trump's words come days after the president himself stated that his administration aims to change the situation in Cuba so that many Cubans who emigrated can return to the island.

"What is happening with Cuba is incredible… we want to fix that. It will only be a matter of time before many amazing people return to Cuba," the president recently said.

Trump has also suggested that a potential political change on the island could pave the way for thousands of Cubans living abroad to return to the country.

The statements were made in a relaxed atmosphere during the reception of the Inter Miami at the White House, following the club's recent season in Major League Soccer (MLS).

During the event, the players presented the president with a club jersey featuring the number 47, in reference to his position as the 47th president of the United States.

The meeting also marked the first direct contact between Trump and Messi at the White House, and served as a backdrop for the president's remarks on the political situation in Cuba, which he has mentioned several times in recent weeks as a country that could undergo significant changes.
