The President of the United States, Donald Trump, could become the most influential leader in foreign policy since Ronald Reagan if he manages to bring down regimes like those of Iran and Cuba, according to a column published by the newspaper The Wall Street Journal.

The analysis, signed by author Joshua Muravchik and published in the opinion section of the newspaper, argues that political changes in those countries would represent a significant blow to the adversaries of the United States on the international stage.

The text argues that there is currently a coalition of authoritarian states seeking to diminish Washington's global influence, including Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.

According to the author, the fall of the Iranian regime would have a significant impact by weakening radical groups and movements connected to Tehran in various regions around the world.

In the case of Cuba, the article argues that although the island no longer poses a direct military threat to the United States, it continues to be a symbol of anti-Americanism in Latin America and a supporter of allied governments like that of Venezuela.

Muravchik states that a potential political change in Cuba would also have a symbolic and political effect by weakening that bloc of governments opposed to Washington.

The column concludes that if Trump is able to drive transformations of that nature on the international stage, he could achieve an impact comparable to that of Reagan during the end of the Cold War, when the collapse of the Soviet Union marked the close of a historic era.

Within American politics, some people have already compared Trump to Reagan.

Recently, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham claimed that the Cuban regime's days are numbered. "Cuba is next. This communist dictatorship in Cuba has its days counted," Graham said in an interview with Fox News.

The Republican, one of Trump's closest allies in the Senate, compared the president to Ronald Reagan, stating that Trump will finish the job that Reagan couldn't complete.

"We have the opportunity not only to take down the mothership of terrorism, Iran. We also have the chance to eliminate one of the deadliest allies in the Middle East, Hezbollah," Graham said, referring to the U.S. attack on Iran that eliminated the top officials of the Islamic Republic, including Ayatollah Khamenei.
