The death of two Cuban doctors who were working in Venezuela has caused shock among family members, colleagues, and acquaintances, while one of the families has revealed that they are facing a difficult battle to say goodbye to their loved one on the island.
One of the deceased is Roberto Mengana Arias, who died in a traffic accident in Venezuelan territory. The news was confirmed by his brother, Ray Dany Molina Arias, through a message posted on Facebook, in which he requested help to raise the necessary funds to repatriate the body.
According to the explanation, the authorities and funeral services in Venezuela demand $10,000 to transport the body to Cuba, a sum that the family cannot afford.
"They just informed us that to bring his body and have him wake and be buried here in his homeland... they are charging us 10,000 USD in Venezuela, which is money we do not have," wrote the brother of the doctor.
The family is also experiencing a particularly painful situation. Their mother, suffering from thyroid cancer, has been unable to improve due to the lack of medications and medical supplies in Cuba, so her loved ones hope she can say goodbye to her son.
"I need to make this situation known to see if I can raise the money to bring him and give him his final farewell," added the relative, who also asked people to share the post to raise awareness of the case.
Roberto Mengana Arias had left behind a wife and three children in Venezuela, as explained by his brother in the same message.
The tragedy adds to another recent death of a Cuban doctor who was on a mission in Venezuela. The Polyclinic Pedro Borrás Astorga reported the passing of the collaborator Yoswel Díaz Camaliche.
The medical institution expressed its condolences to family and friends, highlighting that the doctor was “a man of integrity whose values and sense of responsibility earned him an excellent reputation among his colleagues.”
Cuban medical missions abroad have been one of the main sources of income for the Cuban state for years, but they have also been surrounded by controversy due to the working conditions of the professionals and the challenges many families face when emergencies or tragedies occur outside the country.
Meanwhile, the family of Roberto Mengana Arias continues to try to raise the necessary funds for his body to be returned to Cuba and buried in his homeland.
