U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized approximately 214 pounds (97 kilograms) of cocaine hidden underneath a cargo ship that arrived at the port of San Juan, Puerto Rico, from the Dominican Republic.
The drug was discovered on February 26 during a routine inspection of the vessel M/V MEDSTAR, which arrived from the port of Río Haina.
CBP reported in an official statement that the narcotics shipment was concealed within a parasitic device attached to the hull of the vessel, a technique used by drug trafficking networks to transport drugs without being easily detected.
During the boarding, the officers used underwater drone technology to inspect the underside of the ship, which allowed them to identify the suspicious device.
The estimated value of the seized cocaine amounts to about 1.7 million dollars, according to federal authorities.
"The seizure demonstrates the dedication and skill of our officers in using advanced technology to protect our borders," stated Roberto Vaquero, director of field operations for CBP in Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands.
The operation also involved the Diving Unit of the San Juan Municipal Police, which assisted in recovering the device attached to the ship's hull. Additionally, agents from the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) arrived to support the investigative efforts.
The drug was transported for analysis and custody in accordance with the procedures established by federal authorities.
Authorities confirmed that the investigation remains open to determine potential responsibilities in the attempted smuggling.
