The province of Pinar del Río was completely without electricity this Thursday due to a malfunction in a transmission line, as reported by the Electric Company of the region via its social media channels.

According to the entity, the blackout occurred due to a "trip" in the transmission line connecting Mariel with Pinar del Río, which caused a total interruption of the electricity supply throughout the westernmost province of Cuba.

The population is informed that due to a shot in the transmission line from Mariel to Pinar del Río, the province is entirely affected. Efforts are being made to restore service to the province as soon as possible,” stated the Electric Company of Pinar del Río in a Facebook post.

So far, the authorities have not provided details on the specific causes of the outage nor an estimate of the time it will take to fully restore the service.

The outage leaves thousands of households, workplaces, and institutions without electricity, amidst a backdrop of a severe energy crisis that has caused frequent and prolonged blackouts in several regions of the country in recent months.

Technical crews are working to restore the service, although the extent of the damage could delay the full recovery of the electrical system in the province.
