Independent journalist arrested in Havana following protest against blackouts

The activist and independent journalist Yunia Figueredo was detained Tuesday afternoon in Jaimanitas, Playa municipality (Havana), after participating in a pot-banging protest against the blackouts in the area, according to a report by her husband, fellow communicator Frank Correa.

According to information published by journalist Yaima Pardo on , the arrest occurred around 5:00 p.m., durring a police operation in the neighborhood.

According to the report, police officers threw Figueredo's phone to the ground during the arrest. The detention took place in front of his minor daughters and while the area was without electricity.

Until now, his whereabouts are unknown, which has caused concern among family members and activists.

The arrest takes place amidst several consecutive nights of pots and pans banging and protests in various locations in Havana, where citizens have taken to the streets to express their dissatisfaction over the prolonged blackouts and the energy crisis the country is facing.

Independent organizations and journalists have reported that the authorities have responded with arrests and police operations in some of the locations where these protests have occurred.
