The head of U.S. diplomacy in Cuba, Mike Hammer, attended mass this Sunday at the Church of the Virgin of Regla to pray for the release of political prisoners and a better future for Cuba.

“Today we went to mass at the Virgin of Regla Church with a plea and hope for the release of all political prisoners and for a better future for the Cuban people,” reads a post on X from the U.S. Embassy in Havana.

In the images shared by the diplomatic mission, Hammer is seen greeting many attendees at the mass who are welcoming him and asking to take photos.

Yesterday, Hammer expressed his concern for the situation of the residents of Morón, Ciego de Ávila, following the protests that occurred on Friday night.

"I was in Morón in January and I am very concerned about the situation. I met with some regular Cubans there, I hope they are doing well," Hammer said on X.

Last Thursday, within the framework of negotiations with the U.S., the Cuban regime announced that it would release 51 individuals sentenced to imprisonment in what it presented as a gesture made in the context of relations between the Cuban state and the Vatican.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision came after historically held exchanges with the Holy See regarding review processes and the release of individuals deprived of liberty.

Prisoners Defenders confirmed this Sunday that only 19 political prisoners have been released so far.
