Graffiti of "Liberty" censored in a neighborhood of Matanzas just hours after its appearance

A social media post by the Cuban intellectual and activist Alina Bárbara López Hernández showcased the appearance of graffiti with the word “Liberty” in the Armando Mestre neighborhood, in Matanzas, this Monday.

López reported on his that the graffiti appeared on the side of the bakery in the neighborhood where he lives.

The image shows a low-rise building wall with visible signs of deterioration, on which the message was written. The surroundings also reveal urban issues such as potholes, water accumulation, and dirt on the public road.

Hours later, according to the publication itself, the wall was covered with paint, removing the "Freedom" sign. However, the author emphasized that "the graffiti disappeared but the aspiration did not," referring to the meaning of the message.

Alina Bárbara López Hernández is a Cuban historian, university professor, and essayist, known for her critical stance towards the country's political system and her civic activism in defense of rights and freedoms.

This fact is in addition to other similar expressions in various areas of Cuba, where politically charged messages appear spontaneously and are quickly removed by the authorities.
