The United States government stated on Tuesday that Cubans are demanding “basic services, food, and freedom” amidst the economic and social crisis affecting the island.

The statement was made by the Office of Western Hemisphere Affairs of the State Department, which pointed out on social media that the demands of the population reflect fundamental needs.

"The Cuban people are demanding basic needs: essential services, sustenance, and freedom in the face of tyranny. The Cuban regime must respect these fundamental rights," the entity stated.

The statements come amid a backdrop of rising internal tension in Cuba, characterized by prolonged blackouts, food shortages, and protests in various areas across the country.

This Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated his criticisms of the Cuban system, stating that the island's economy "does not work" and that the reforms announced by the regime "are not sufficient" to reverse the crisis or to reach an agreement with Washington.

International organizations have also warned about the deterioration of living conditions in Cuba. The UN has noted that the economic crisis and fuel shortages are impacting essential services such as healthcare, access to food, and water supply.

Likewise, organizations such as Amnesty International have documented increasing difficulties in accessing food, medicine, and basic services, along with restrictions on freedom of expression and arbitrary detentions.

In this scenario, Washington's statements add to the international pressure on the Cuban regime, while within the country, protests and social discontent continue due to the structural crisis affecting the population.
