The U.S. mission chief in Cuba, Mike Hammer, praised the work of independent journalists on the island, highlighting their role in disseminating the reality of the country.

The statement was published by the U.S. Embassy in Havana on the social media platform X, following a meeting between Hammer and independent journalist Camila Acosta, during which they discussed the current situation in Cuba and future prospects.

"I am always impressed by the courage of independent journalists in Cuba who strive to report the true reality on the island," the diplomat stated.

During the exchange, there was also discussion about the hope for a better future for the Cuban people, set against a backdrop of restrictions on press freedom and the information control imposed by the regime.

The message was accompanied by the hashtag #PressFreedom, in line with the repeated complaints regarding the lack of guarantees for the practice of independent journalism in Cuba.

Hammer's words reinforce Washington's support for independent communicators on the island, who face pressures, surveillance, and limitations in their journalistic work.

And it is not the first time the diplomat has met with the independent press in Cuba. Three days ago, Hammer held a meeting with the independent outlet 14ymedio in Havana, where he discussed the current situation in the country.

According to the outlet's own report on its Facebook profile, Hammer ascended the 14 floors to the editorial office during a blackout, where he was welcomed by director Yoani Sánchez and journalist Reinaldo Escobar.
