The distribution of eggs on the Isle of Youth will be limited to four units per person, at a price of 50 Cuban pesos (CUP) each, according to local authorities.
According to a publication from the Citizen Portal of Isla de la Juventud, the distribution began this Wednesday as part of the basic basket and will depend on product availability. In this first round, just over 46,000 units will be distributed.
Rafael Meriño, director of Commerce in the Isle of Youth, stated, “Starting this Wednesday, we will distribute eggs to the population: 4 eggs per person. Each unit is priced at 50 pesos.”
The official added that "in the case of pregnant women and diets, they will have a subsidized price."
The initial distribution will cover warehouses in areas such as El Lucero, Guisa, El Modelo, Amistad, Turquino, and La Cordial, among others.
For his part, Duvel Buchillón, director of the poultry company, explained that “in cooperative production, 30 percent of the output is delivered to the State,” and that once sufficient levels of availability are reached, “deliveries to the warehouses will continue on a staggered basis.”
The situation reflects the limitations in the production and distribution of this staple food, whose availability depends on factors such as production levels and logistical transport.
In various regions of the country, access to eggs has been characterized by similar restrictions: in Artemisa, the sale was established at a carton of 30 units per household for 1,500 CUP, with the option to buy each egg for 50 pesos, amid the scarcity.
Prices have also shown significant fluctuations, with reports of up to 120 CUP per unit in certain regions of the country, reflecting inflation and the differences between provinces.
The combination of low production, distribution difficulties, and other structural factors has directly affected the availability of this product, which is considered one of the main sources of protein in the diet of Cubans.
