The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified cyber actors linked to Russian intelligence services who are conducting a campaign of attacks against users of messaging applications.
The FBI director, Kash Patel, reported on the social media platform X that these groups have been targeting commercial platforms like Signal, focusing on individuals deemed high value, including current and former U.S. government officials, military personnel, political figures, and journalists.
According to the explanation, the operation has gained unauthorized access to thousands of accounts globally.
Once inside, the attackers can review messages, access contact lists, send communications impersonating the victim, and launch new phishing campaigns from trusted identities.
Patel emphasized that the vulnerability does not lie in the applications but in the users themselves, which reinforces the need to take enhanced digital security measures.
The FBI, along with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), issued a joint alert to help identify this type of activity and guide users on how to protect their accounts.
Authorities urged to reinforce personal security on digital platforms in light of the increase in this type of operations linked to state actors.
