A child identified as Kusum González Pedroso, 10 months old, was moved to a home for girls and boys without family support in Camagüey, after being discharged from the hospital following a stay characterized by severe signs of malnutrition and abuse.

According to the testimonial from the user La China Castillo on the Facebook page Revolico Camagüey - Plaza de Méndez, the minor remained for approximately three months in extreme conditions of neglect, locked in a dark room within a boarding house and fed only once a day.

Upon being rescued following reports from neighbors, he was found to be in a severe state of malnutrition, psychomotor delay, and physical injuries, including burns.

After being admitted to the Eduardo Agramonte Piña pediatric hospital, the case sparked a significant citizen mobilization, with donations of food, hygiene products, and other basic supplies for his recovery.

According to the information shared this Friday on his Facebook profile by the user Guillermo Rodríguez Sánchez, the minor is already under institutional protection in a state-run home, where he will continue to receive care.

Authorities at the center highlighted the recovery of the child and the support received from the community.

However, questions about the responsibilities in the case persist. According to details provided by Rodríguez Sánchez, "the mother is indeed in police custody," but "the 'caretaker,' who is believed to have committed most of the abuses, including burns with cigarettes, multiple bruises, and subjecting the child to severe malnutrition and thirst, is not in prison. Evidently, this was done in collusion with the Kusum's mother."

Abundó also stated that "Kusum is the sixth child fathered by this woman and her history of child abuse is extensive".

The case has also generated outrage due to the highlighted background, which points to possible prior episodes of child mistreatment linked to the young boy's family environment, reinforcing criticism of failures in the protection mechanisms.

The situation has once again highlighted the vulnerability of minors in contexts of social deterioration and the lack of timely and effective responses to reports of abuse, in a scenario where civic intervention proved to be crucial in preventing an even more serious outcome.
