The educational authorities of Havana suspended teaching activities on Thursday, March 5, in all educational centers in the capital, including daycare centers, due to the electricity crisis affecting the country following a massive blackout that occurred the night before.
The information was disclosed by the magazine Hola Habana, from the official Canal Habana, which cited a statement from the General Directorate of Education of the capital.
The entity stated that the measure responds to the current electrical situation and urged the educational community to stay alert to official information.
However, this measure has not been applied in Matanzas. According to the official newspaper Girón, the sector's leadership in the province "categorically denied the rumors circulating in informal groups and social media regarding a supposed suspension of teaching activities in the territory."
In addition, it was reported that: "educational authorities have implemented strategies to ensure the continuity of the teaching process."
In the case of Havana, the suspension occurs after a widespread blackout caused by the unexpected shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant in Matanzas, the largest in the country.
The incident affected the National Electroenergetic System and left large areas of Cuba without electricity during the night on Wednesday.
The Electric Company of Havana reported that during the early morning the gradual restoration of service in the capital has begun.
According to the most recent report issued at 5:28 AM, 20 substations and 98 distribution circuits had been restored, allowing power to be returned to 296,467 customers, which represents 34% of Havana's users.
The entity specified that during the reconnection process, essential services were prioritized, including 37 hospitals and five water supply systems.
On its part, the Ministry of Energy and Mines reported that at 5:01 in the morning, the National Electroenergetic System has been reconnected from Guantánamo to Pinar del Río, although it clarified that the incorporation of generation units continues gradually.
Despite the reconnection of the system, numerous areas of the country remain without electricity or are experiencing unstable service.
