A Cuban mother reported that her 10-month-old son's life is at risk because the healthcare system on the island cannot perform the surgery he urgently needs in order to breathe.
The report was published this Monday on Facebook by journalist José Luis Tan Estrada, who shared the testimony of Elizabeth Cedres Torres, a resident of the Camagüey province.
According to the mother, her son, Darwin Daniel Sotolongo Cedres, has been hospitalized for four months in the intensive care unit of the Pediatric Hospital of Camagüey, where he depends on continuous life support.
The minor suffers from grade 4 tracheal stenosis, a severe congenital malformation that causes critical narrowing of the trachea and seriously compromises their breathing.
According to the circulated testimony, medical personnel and National Health authorities informed him about a month ago that the required surgery cannot be performed in Cuba due to a lack of resources and specialists for this type of procedure.
The mother explained that the authorities indicated they would investigate possible agreements with other countries that could take on the surgery, but so far she has not received a concrete response or a viable alternative.
In light of the lack of solutions within the country, Elizabeth Cedres Torres made an urgent appeal to the international community, to doctors, hospitals, and humanitarian organizations to help facilitate the operation abroad before it is too late.
According to his statement, he has all the medical documentation that supports the diagnosis and the need for the intervention.
