The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated that Venezuela will have free and fair elections, but urged patience, noting that the transition process is still underway following the recent departure of Nicolás Maduro from power.
During an interview with journalist Sean Hannity on Fox News, Rubio emphasized that "there must finally be a phase of transition" in the South American country and reiterated that this path is essential before any electoral process.
The head of U.S. diplomacy recalled that it has only been three months since the capture of Maduro, an event that marked the beginning of a new political stage in Venezuela, now under the interim presidency of Delcy Rodríguez, which, in his view, explains the need to proceed with caution.
Rubio insisted that Venezuela deserves free and fair elections, but emphasized that achieving this goal will take time as the necessary political and institutional conditions are consolidated.
The statements come hours after their meeting in Washington with opposition leader María Corina Machado, in a context of increasing contacts between both parties.
In parallel, the Venezuelan government recently sent a diplomatic delegation to the United States to hold meetings with officials from the State Department and explore an improvement in bilateral relations, including the possible reactivation of its diplomatic mission in Washington.
Rubio also noted that the Donald Trump administration values the progress made so far with the authorities in Caracas, including the establishment of a legal framework that would allow American companies to participate in the marketing of Venezuelan oil.
During that same interview, the Secretary of State stated that the Cuban regime is in serious trouble and anticipated that the Trump administration is preparing upcoming changes in its policy towards the island.
