The Cuban infielder Enmanuel Barrera, 17 years old, recently left Cuba heading to the Dominican Republic, where he will join the Sánchez Academy to prepare for a potential signing with a Major League organization.

The news was reported by Francys Romero, a journalist specializing in Cuban prospects, through his Facebook page and his Beisbol FR platform.

Barrera is from Camagüey and stood out in the Sub-15 and youth categories representing that province. In 2025, he was part of the preselection for the Cuba Under-18 team, which positioned him as one of the most followed young talents in Cuban baseball.

The prospect is valued for his skills as a hitter and can perform at both third base and shortstop. According to Romero, Barrera "has hitting skills and plays third base and shortstop" and "will be training at the Sánchez Academy."

That academy, founded by former Major League player Alex Sánchez in Santo Domingo, has become one of the leading centers for Cuban prospects seeking visibility among MLB talent scouts.

In recent months, several young players have gone through their facilities: the catcher José Muñiz and outfielder Cristopher García arrived in October 2025, and the shortstop Alex Brayan Batista did so in January 2026.

The departure of Barrera is part of a sustained exodus of young Cuban talent who choose Dominican Republic as a platform to negotiate with MLB teams, something that is impossible from Cuba due to the restrictions imposed by the government on its athletes.

The international signing period 2025-2026 has been particularly active for Cuban baseball, with million-dollar contracts for young infielders: Jaider Suárez signed with the Kansas City Royals for 1.7 million dollars, Joniel Hernández with the San Diego Padres for 1.4 million, Leonardo Sevilla with the Arizona Diamondbacks for 750,000 dollars, and Karell Naranjo with the Cleveland Guardians for 625,000 dollars, all after having spent time in the Caribbean island.

In March 2026, the 15-year-old infielder Anyelo Fleitas also arrived in the Dominican Republic after leading the Under-15 National Championship with a batting average of .439 and 26 runs batted in.

At just 17 years old and with an impressive record in the development categories, Barrera joins a generation of Cuban prospects who see this path as the only real route to professional baseball.
