Medical organizations in exile Cruz Verde Internacional and Solidaridad sin Fronteras, based in Miami, are promoting the Green Teams project as an alternative for Cuban health professionals who are part of the brigade in Guatemala and decide not to return to the island after the end of the medical agreement between the two countries.

Doctor Julio César Alfonso, president of Solidaridad sin Fronteras, confirmed to Martí Noticias that both organizations held a meeting in Washington D.C. with representatives from the Guatemalan embassy to formally present the initiative.

"We recently had a meeting in Washington DC with representatives from the Guatemalan embassy to offer this service," said Alfonso, in the context of a situation where Cuba has already begun the gradual withdrawal of its collaborators from the Central American country.

The context surrounding the departure of the Cuban brigade from Guatemala is complex. Guatemalan authorities reported more than 60 complaints against members of the brigade for practicing medicine without meeting the legal requirements mandated in the country.

The government of Guatemala formalized the non-renewal of the agreement through a diplomatic letter, bringing an end to an arrangement that had kept hundreds of Cuban doctors working in the territory. As a result, 172 doctors returned to the island on March 5, in one of the first repatriation groups.

The situation in Guatemala is part of a broader regional trend. Jamaica also notified the termination of its agreement with Havana, while in Guyana it was reported that Cuba was unilaterally withdrawing a brigade of over 200 doctors, amid conflicting reports regarding who made the decision.

The Equipos Verdes project aims to provide an option for those who do not wish to return to Cuba, a country whose medical export program has been described by Washington as a scheme of forced labor. This initiative complements other efforts directed at Cuban healthcare professionals residing in the United States and those seeking alternatives outside the island.
