Miguel Díaz-Canel sent a congratulatory message to Kim Jong-un on his reelection as president of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, reaffirming the Cuban regime's commitment to strengthening ties with Pyongyang, as reported this Thursday by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The letter was sent in early April, weeks after Kim was reelected on March 22 during the first session of the XV Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea, marking his third consecutive reelection to that position since the establishment of the Commission in 2016.
"I affirm that I place great importance on relations with North Korea and that Cuba will make every effort possible to help our friendly nation overcome the pressure tactics of hostile forces," Díaz-Canel expressed in the letter, according to the North Korean state agency.
The relations between Havana and Pyongyang have gone through moments of tension in recent years, especially after the restoration of diplomatic relations between Cuba and South Korea in 2024, a move that deeply irritated Kim Jong-un's government.
This rapprochement with Seoul generated tensions with Pyongyang, to the point that it was revealed that the mission included precisely preventing that Cuban-South Korean rapprochement, according to a high-ranking North Korean diplomat assigned to Cuba who defected.
Despite these tensions, the Cuban regime has insisted on keeping its historical alliance with North Korea alive. In previous years, Kim Jong-un had stated that both countries were in the same trench defending sovereignty, a rhetoric that Díaz-Canel's message seems to want to revitalize.
According to the Korean agency, Kim and Díaz-Canel met during a trip to China to attend a military parade in Beijing last September.
