Liz Faras-Mendez, a Puerto Rican soldier deployed on active service across the world, fights for the release of her husband, a Venezuelan who has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since October 2025 in San Antonio, Texas.

The man, father of a ten-year-old girl, entered the United States in 2024 under the humanitarian parole program CHNV aimed at Venezuelans, Nicaraguans, Cubans, and Haitians, according to a report from Telemundo 51.

Once in the country, he married the soldier and submitted his application for permanent residence based on marriage to a military citizen, with all his paperwork in progress at the time of his arrest.

He was arrested when he went to his annual immigration appointment. Soldier Liz herself accompanied him that day, unaware of what would happen when they crossed the door of the office.

"We were confident, I specifically accompanied him to the town of San Antonio in Texas. Once I accompanied him there, at the moment he entered his appointment, he was detained," the woman recounted.

The soldier reports that after the arrest, her husband has lost 25 pounds and also developed hypertension that requires daily medication.

This is not the first case of this nature that has been reported. At the beginning of this month, Annie Ramos, a young Honduran woman and wife of a United States Army soldier, was released after spending nearly a week in detention at a federal immigration center, following her arrest inside a military base in Louisiana.

The young woman, 22 years old, was detained when she went to register at the base where her husband, Sergeant First Class Matthew Blank, serves, with the aim of accessing military benefits and starting the process to obtain permanent residency.

His case generated a strong public reaction, especially among critics of President Donald Trump's immigration policy, who warned that such measures could affect the morale of the troops, particularly when a service member is preparing for deployment.
