The Venezuelan-American Héctor Mujica, former executive at Google, announced his Democratic candidacy for the United States Congress for Florida's 28th District on April 2nd, aiming to challenge the Cuban-American Republican Carlos Giménez in the general elections on November 3, 2026.

Mujica, 37 years old, is the child of first-generation Venezuelan and American immigrants, educated in Florida's public school system and holds a master's degree in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley.

Before entering politics, he headed the Economic Opportunity area for the Americas at Google's philanthropic arm and participated in the company's Latino Leadership Council, a profile that his advisors present as a technocratic and progressive alternative to the Republican leadership in the district.

Her candidacy is framed within the anti-MAGA movement and has three main pillars: the affordability crisis in South Florida—housing, healthcare, and cost of living—the impact of artificial intelligence on employment, and government transparency.

It is worth noting that Mujica had previously launched a campaign for the Senate, although he ultimately chose to focus his efforts on the race for Congress, a decision driven by the six points that prompted the strategic shift of his campaign team.

The political landscape in which this candidacy is situated is complex: Donald Trump announced his full support for Giménez's re-election, which strengthens the position of the Cuban-American congressman ahead of the elections.

Giménez, for his part, is known for his strong positions against the regimes of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, which provides him with a solid electoral base in South Florida.

"For too long, this district has had the same type of leadership, focused on political theater in Washington while families face pressure," Mujica stated while announcing his candidacy.
