Sandro Castro, grandson of Fidel Castro, published a video titled "The Circus is Fresh" in which he subtly criticizes the regime in Havana, but the response from thousands of Cubans on social media was decisive: they reminded him that he himself is part of the spectacle he denounces.
The post was shared on their Instagram profile. In the video, Sandro compares his car to Cuba, saying: "Mom, my car is like the country, it doesn't move forward," making a direct reference to the fuel crisis that is crippling the economy on the island. The reel ends with the phrase: "Don't struggle, we live in a circus."
The post generated a flood of comments that, instead of offering unreserved praise, returned the metaphor by pointing directly to the root of the problem.
"The clowns have always lived in the circus," wrote one user. Another person pointed out, "Your family owns the tent," and an internet user added, "Yes, we live in a circus and the main clown is you, Sandro Castro."
Other users were more direct about the inequality represented by Sandro's case. While he criticizes the government without severe consequences, ordinary citizens face detentions, harassment, and even years in prison for expressing themselves on social media.
"Sandro can say whatever he wants, and the rest of the country can't have an opinion or express it. 'Aren't we all equals?' asked a Cuban woman."
Another person went further: "Where are those committed revolutionaries? Is there no repudiation rally for Sandro? Where is the brave revolutionary police? There are no patrols in front of Sandro's house, nor any arbitrary detentions."
Hundreds of Cubans have reacted to the video and expressed that the influencer's criticisms are merely a show, of mediocre humor, which the government itself allows without consequences.
"We live in a circus, but the audience is suffering tremendously, so I find no humor in it," summarized a commentator, clearly expressing the sentiment of those who see Sandro Castro not as a dissident, but as another performer in the regime's spectacle. "He is the clown in this show."
