Cuban intellectual and activist Miryorly García made a strong call on social media this Sunday, urging her fellow countrymen not to participate in the campaign "My Signature for the Homeland," organized by the Cuban regime in the context of the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Playa Girón.
The activity, announced on Saturday by Yuniasky Crespo Baquero, head of the Ideological Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, aims to collect signatures in workplaces, student centers, and communities in support of the Revolutionary Government's Declaration titled "Girón is today and always," issued on April 17.
"And many people will go there to sign once again irresponsibly, because Cubans have adapted to the double standard, to the 'why should I make a mark if it doesn't matter,' " García wrote on Facebook, directly appealing to the civic conscience of those who believe that their participation has no consequences.
García was direct in rejecting the argument that the regime is immovable: "Don't come to me with the idea that this can't be toppled, that it's already dead and just needs to be buried with the 'No means no' that it deserves."
His call particularly targets those who sign out of inertia or fear of losing their jobs: "What work is there in a country that is coming to a standstill?" he asked, referring to the crisis currently facing Cuba with power outages lasting up to 22 hours a day, salaries that do not exceed 16 dollars a month, and an economy that has contracted by 23% since 2019.
The activist also called for solidarity with the more than 1,200 political prisoners in Cuba: "Dare to stop being complicit, to give support they do not deserve, to allow them to humiliate you, do not betray those who are imprisoned for their bravery."
García argued that collective abstention can reverse the dynamics of fear: "Whether you stand out may depend on them experiencing more fear than the one they are trying to impose on us through repression, that the fear changes sides and they pack their bags and flee because they clearly understand that they are not supported."
Díaz-Canel inaugurated the campaign with his own signature and presided over the central event in Ciénaga de Zapata, Matanzas. The statement supported by the signatures affirms that "Cuba will never be a trophy, nor another star in the American constellation", a direct reference to the Trump administration and the sanctions imposed since January 2026.
García has a documented history of resistance. He participated in the 27N movement in 2020, refused to sign a State Security document in June 2025 that he labeled as "falsehoods," and in February 2026, he took part in the submission of a petition for amnesty supported by 1,535 signatures to the National Assembly.
"With the signature, the hope for a better Cuba for everyone is lost. It's time for your actions to align with your feelings," concluded García, with a final message to those who have doubts: "I assure you that it's not so hard to say 'I don't want to sign' and you will feel very good about yourself."
